The Storm
Fairmont Hotel
"Every 20 minutes, thunder cracks and real rain falls into the lagoon in the center of the room. A band plays pop covers on a floating boat. It is ridiculous, campy, and absolutely essential."
Tonga Room.
This was the plunge pool of the Fairmont Hotel in 1929. In 1945, a Hollywood set designer turned it into a tiki wonderland. It hasn't changed since.
The Scorpion Bowl
It serves four people. It comes with 3-foot long straws. Itโs the fastest way to start a fun night.
Bourbon & Branch. ๐ฅ
There is no sign outside. You ring a buzzer and give the password. Inside, itโs a labyrinth of secret rooms disguised as a library.
House Rules
"Speak easy." No shouting, no cell phone use at the bar, no photography. It preserves the illicit 1920s atmosphere.
* Tip: Book 'The Library' specifically.
The Bookcase
"Yes, there is actually a hidden door behind a bookcase. It leads to 'Wilson & Wilson,' a detective-themed bar within the bar. Itโs like a nesting doll of secrets."
Live & Loud
Civic Center
"Itโs dark, moody, and the stage is right there. The jazz is modern and energetic. It feels like New York, but with better cocktails."
Mr. Tipple's.
A dedicated jazz club that doesn't feel stuffy. No cover charge most nights, just incredible musicians and dim lighting.
The Vibe
Itโs unpretentious but sexy. Perfect for a second date where you want to sit close and listen to the music.
Whitechapel. ๐
Step inside and you are instantly transported to an abandoned London Tube station circa 1890. Vaulted ceilings, subway tiles, and over 400 types of gin.
The Aesthetic
It is arguably the most immersive bar design in the country. From the "last train" announcements to the Victorian upholstery, every detail is perfect.
* Drink: A Gin & Tonic (They have a whole menu of them).
Steampunk Date
"It feels like a movie set. Sitting in a plush red booth under an arched tiled ceiling is cozy, private, and visually stunning. Itโs perfect for a rainy night."
Chinatown Secret
China Live (2nd Floor)
"Find the unmarked door with the bat symbol on the second floor of China Live. Inside, itโs all gold, velvet, and futuristic luxury. It feels like the VIP lounge in *Blade Runner*."
Cold Drinks Bar.
This is where you go to impress. The bartenders wear tuxedos, the scotch collection is rare, and the atmosphere is heavy with glamour.
The Duck Fat Old Fashioned
Yes, it sounds strange. Yes, it is incredible. Savory, rich, and unforgettable.
The Interval. ๐ฐ๏ธ
Part bar, part museum, part library. Run by the Long Now Foundation, it houses prototypes for a clock designed to run for 10,000 years.
Conversation Piece
Floor-to-ceiling books, mechanical art, and Brian Eno ambient music. It is the best bar in the city for actually hearing your date and having a deep conversation.
Smart Cocktails
"The menu is a history book of mixology. Order the 'Navy Grog'โitโs historically accurate and potent. Then take a walk along the marina waterfront right outside."
